Our Universal Bike Program is S.T.E.A.M. education geared towards health, fitness, science and sports. Whether its learning how to build a bicycle or taking it apart, we teach our students that the bike can be a key tool in helping to build confidence, balance and stability in life. We also teach bike safety to provide students with tools of how to exercise good judgement when riding. Students are taught to understand the value of bicycles and how they relate to every aspect of life while also using them to be physically active. As students engage in our many learning activities, they practice facing and overcoming obstacles in a range of situations.
Lock in your child's spot early to participate in our S.T.E.A.M. Education Summer Program.
At FreeWheel SEW we tap into the science of bicycle riding. Participants learn about and monitor concepts such as motion, inertia, and the function of gears. Our kids study biological functions such as the respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. We then help each of our participants set goals and monitor their progress in breathing and muscle building as they increase their bicycle riding.
We have also launched into new technology with virtual reality headsets where our students ride bicycles and engage in other sports using state of the art sanitized headsets.
FreeWheel SEW participants build their skills in engineering and mathematics in our Universal Bike Program. With the guidance of our trained mentors and instructors, we introduce the fundamentals of bicycle design and functions. Our students not only study how a bicycle works, but they also apply gear, axle and steering concepts to designing and building their own two and four wheel model vehicles.
Our bicycle experts also teach each student how to repair bicycles. Groups work together to build a bicycle from scratch and test riding on their full scale model creations. On group bicycle rides, students are encouraged to become problem solvers as they repair and adjust their bicycles based on rider size, trip length and terrain changes. This includes introductory courses in bicycle safety.
We are not just a summer camp. We are an enrichment program that teaches each of our students to become problem solvers, innovative thinkers and cooperative team mates. All of our campers return to school the following year having learned about health, fitness, science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
A recent addition to S.T.E.M. learning, is the "A", representing the arts. At FreeWheel SEW we nurture the creativity of our students not only in their vehicle engineering designs, but also in art and writing activities. We encourage our campers to be observant and reflective as they experience each activity throughout the day.
Each participant build their language knowledge as we introduce related fiction and non-fiction books for our students to read and make their creations. This includes visits to libraries as well as texts brought in for the students during journaling time.
We have socially distanced stretching, meditation, and grounding activities each morning followed by reflective journaling to build student writing skills. Their journaling is a mind exercise in nature observation and descriptive writing. We also have arts and crafts activities where students create landscape dioramas as well as paint murals and banners for community viewing.
